{"id":1092,"date":"2014-10-31T06:05:06","date_gmt":"2014-10-31T10:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/allphasepharma.com\/dir\/?p=1092"},"modified":"2014-10-31T10:56:57","modified_gmt":"2014-10-31T14:56:57","slug":"ebola-transmission-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allphasepharma.com\/dir\/2014\/10\/31\/1092\/ebola-transmission-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"Preventing Ebola Transmission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chapter 166\u00a0<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> in the new Mandell textbook was written before the current Ebola outbreak, so I thought it would be interesting to read <a href=\"https:\/\/allphasepharma.com\/dir\/?p=1092&amp;preview=true\">View Post<\/a>it again and check whether the \u2018old\u2019 recommendations for personal protection were still valid now that we have learned much more during the ongoing outbreak.<div class=\"simplePullQuote right\"><p>\u00a0<strong>Direct Contact Transmission\u00a0<\/strong>Involves body-surface to body-surface contact and physical transfer of microorganisms between a susceptible person (host) and an infected or colonized person [2]<\/p>\n<\/div><\/p>\n<p>In this chapter, the Short View Summary states right upfront:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Barrier nursing procedures include wearing protective clothing, masks, and eye shields<\/li>\n<li>Isolation of infected patients and close contacts is essential<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Well, it sounds basic but\u00a010,000 cases later I find little to add to these statements:\u00a0 these two points really capture what we need to do.<div class=\"simplePullQuote right\"><p>\u00a0<strong>Indirect Contact Transmission\u00a0<\/strong>Involves contact of susceptible person (host) with a contaminated intermediate object such as needles, dressings, gloves or contaminated (unwashed) hands [2]<\/p>\n<\/div><\/p>\n<p>Maybe we learned that it is hard to implement strict isolation techniques in rural Africa <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">and in US hospitals as well<\/span>. \u00a0It is still all about strictest adherence to contact precautions, training in isolation procedures, and eliminating \u2013 as much as possible &#8211; any chances for human error.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> T Geisbert.
