{"id":521,"date":"2014-07-06T14:42:36","date_gmt":"2014-07-06T14:42:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/allphasepharma.com\/dir\/?p=521"},"modified":"2014-08-31T16:17:21","modified_gmt":"2014-08-31T20:17:21","slug":"aeromonas-salmonicida-trouble-for-aquaculture-with-drug-resistance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allphasepharma.com\/dir\/2014\/07\/06\/521\/aeromonas-salmonicida-trouble-for-aquaculture-with-drug-resistance\/","title":{"rendered":"Aeromonas salmonicida: Trouble for Aquaculture with Drug Resistance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/allphasepharma.com\/dir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Salmon.jpe\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-531\" src=\"https:\/\/allphasepharma.com\/dir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Salmon.jpe\" alt=\"Salmon\" width=\"285\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a>Aeromonas salmonicida causes furunculosis in salmon hatcheries and in freshwater fish.\u00a0 The organism has several recognized virulence mechanisms including the T3SS\u00a0[1].\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A. salmonicida\u00a0has become resistant to penicillin, tetracycline and erythromycin.\u00a0 It remains susceptible to chloramphenicol and aminoglycoside according to a publication from Romania [2] but another reference describes it as resistant to chloramphenicol and sulfonamides as well [3].\u00a0 The frequent use of quinolones undoubtedly contributed to the rapid development of resistance to this drug class[4].\u00a0 An attenuated live vaccine is available and widely used with good effect.<\/p>\n<p>While considered non-pathogenic to humans, a recent case report from India describes a patient with positive blood cultures for A. salmonicida.\u00a0 The organism was sensitive to multiple antibiotics.\u00a0 Unfortunately, no history regarding exposure to fish is provided; the patient presented with a non-descript febrile illness which responded promptly to cefixime.[5]\u00a0 Possible misidentification of A. salmonicida by automated bacterial identification systems (Vitek) make this case somewhat questionable.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, Vibrio salmonicida causes a septic disease.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[1] Vanden Bergh.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.proteomesci.com\/content\/11\/1\/42\">http:\/\/www.proteomesci.com\/content\/11\/1\/42<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[2] <a href=\"http:\/\/www.univagro-iasi.ro\/revista_zoo\/ro\/documente\/Pdf_Vol_57\/Angelica_Docan.pdf\">http:\/\/www.univagro-iasi.ro\/revista_zoo\/ro\/documente\/Pdf_Vol_57\/Angelica_Docan.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[3] http:\/\/microbewiki.kenyon.edu\/index.php\/Aeromonas_salmonicida<\/p>\n<p>[4] Giraud.
